Keynote Lecture for the Lecture Series "Foundations and Methods of Digital Humanism"

Date: October 2, 2024 / 16.45-18.15 hrs / BIG-Hörsaal lecture hall, University of Vienna main building 

Title: The AI Act & ChatGPT: A new Hope for Democracy? 

Description: After a brief introduction into ChatGPT (for those who still think it is something like search engine), I will introduce and give examples of some concerns and opportunities from AI for journalism Democracy, to then turn towards the European legislator. I will discuss how the AI Act and the DSA tackle some of these concerns to give us citizens a new hope for a save and trustworthy future democracy with AI, but also give a behind-the-scene look how some of these rules were made.  

About the speaker: Natali Helberger is Distinguished University Professor of Information Law and Digital Technology at the University of Amsterdam and a member of the Executive Board of the Institute for Information Law (IViR). Helberger is an elected member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences (KHMW), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Social Science Council of the KNAW. She is the founder and co-director of the AI, Media & Democracy Lab, and of the AlgoSoc (Public Values in the Algorithmic Society) Gravity Consortium. In her function as expert, Natali advices the European Commission, European Parliament, Council of Europe, and national regulators and civil society organisations.
